How to Know When You Need to Have Your Prongs Repaired

If you have diamond and gemstone rings that you wear everyday, chances are at some point you will need to have the prongs repaired. There are signs to look for that often get overlooked leaving your stones at risk. The most obvious sign is that your prongs are catching. Catching on clothing, blankets, hair or other things that cause the prong to pull further away from the stone. If you notice this happening, STOP wearing the ring and bring it in for further examination.

Prongs start catching for two reasons, either one or more prongs is raised or the metal has worn down causing the prong to become thin and weak.

A prong can become raised from bumping your ring on something or it may not have been set tightly by the manufacturer. This is a fairly easy repair, however, we do not recommend trying to repair this on your own. Bring it in and we will push the prong back down into place securing and tightening your stone.

When prongs are worn down, that means the metal starts to wear down from everyday wear. Because the metal gets so thin and sharp it catches easily on clothing or hair and the metal can be broken very easily. Chances are if one tip is worn down, all the tips will be worn down. Repairing worn prongs requires us to build up or re-tip the metal using the same metal the prong is made from while tightening and securing the stone into place. The price of re-tipping varies depending on how many tips need to be rebuilt, size of the prongs, and what kind of metal the ring is made from.

In some serious cases the ring may need a whole new crown. The crown is the entire head on top of the ring that holds the stone. This would be more expensive than re-tipping and cost would depend on what type of head or crown would be replaced.
